As awesome as the F-8 was, I read they had a horrendous accident rate. I don’t recall the classifications but something like 80% were involved in major accidents, although most were not total losses and were returned to flight status. Designing something capable of supersonic flight and unstable enough to be very maneuverable and putting it on aircraft carriers always carries risk.
