1/35th Meng Pickup with ZU-23-2 - "Qilo" Edition

Wow, that looks really sharp and the subtle dusting on the bottom of the body looks great!

I think the tire pigments are fine.

Did you do anything to enhance the tailgate letters such as bordering them on the side? They really do stand out well.

Great job!

Thank you! Glad to hear the pigments don’t look like too much. I get a little in my own head sometimes.

As far as the lettering goes, it’s aftermarket PE. I used some tape to keep the spacing from the fret, laid it down on the tailgate where it was supposed to go and touched the edges with extra thin CA and let capillary action do the rest. But it was likely the black basecoat, mottling, and a blend coat (like painting a plane) that I think makes them pop - not much paint got in and around the edges there.

Yeap I agree about the pigments on the tyres- they look good to me! The color contrasts in this are particularly nice too- the slightly satin factory finish of the truck, the rusty metal of the gun platform and the matt colors of the gun itself all make for an interesting model.

After a vacation and the last little bits taking extra long because they’re the last little bits, the technical is done! Now it’s onto the base. Something simple for an office display is the goal.

I whipped up a little multicam duffle bag to add some visual interest to the cab. I based it on Qilo’s multicam windbreaker hanging in my closet. Tried my best at the “S|C” logo which was done as part of a collab between Qilo and a retired SEAL.

Cheers! Time for the base and this one will be done (finally)

Outstanding!

The dusting and rusting on the technical looks amazingly realistic. Great job all around and the little aftermarket accessories such as the water bottles and duffel bag really add a “human touch” to the scale model.

Thanks for the kind words gents!

The spare parts bin has built up over the many years and it was definitely fun to raid it for some accessories to breathe some life into this. We’ll see what else I can wrangle up for the base to help do the same.

And the weathering video is live!

Shouldn’t be too much longer and the base will be done as well.

I’ve finished shaping the base and have gotten the texture along with some shrubbery and miscellaneous stones on. Not too much left now, just need to blend some colors together on the base and paint the sides black and I’ll call this one done.

I think I’m going to swing by Home Depot this weekend and see if I can’t find something that’s a little more substantial to place this on. The base itself feels comically light as it sits right now.

And that’s a wrap! I’m super pleased with how this one turned out. It’s my first base in many, many years and I definitely questioned myself through the process but I’m very happy with the result. Time to deliver it to Qilo.

The YouTube video of making the base is now live as well and is below:

Thanks again for all your kind words throughout this project and I hope you’ve enjoyed it!

For the next project I’ll be tackling my first 1/700th ship as practice working with resin water in a workup towards something like this:

Cheers!

I’ve loved seeing this come together Nick- an interesting concept from the little ornament to the model in 1/35. The base you’ve put it on shows it off nicely too- a great piece altogether!
