1/72 Fairey Swordfish-MkI Part 3 of the Illustrious Trilogy

I tried to build this kit years ago, The components looked great on the sprue and started to go together well. I got the fuselage together and then the upper wing. BUT when I attempted the lower wings, no matter what I did, they had a distinct anhedral and sloped downwards from root to tip. I gave up and binned it…

Just something to watch out for when you get to that point?

I experienced that problem, too! I later realized I had glued in the spar (that supports the wings and provides the dihedral) in reverse so that it now made an anhedral. By then, the wing roots and spar were solidly glued together and impossible to separate, so I had to clip off the spar ends, leaving just enough to glue the wing to, then glue the wings in place supported by blocks to obtain the right amount of dihedral. It complicated the build because the dihedral was never exact, and it left a wider than necessary gap. But it turned out not too bad! :sad_but_relieved_face:

And thereby hangs the tale! Thanks for your explanation. Hopefully I’ll remember if ever I want to build another wingything instead of armour.

@wunseventytooth Hi Ian, thank you for the head’s up. I hear what you’re saying. It’s so easy to mix the parts from one side to the other leading to a irreparable error as @Biggles50 Leo mentioned.

Fortunately so far, so good with this build and all is going together ok…

So, a bit of an update to that end…

And an overall view…

The main fuselage is nearly ready for paint, along with the other main parts, but I am going to prep all the remaining small parts prior to heading to the paint shop…

Thanks for looking…

More soon

Airfix made the elevators posable as for take-off, or landing, or neutral position, but moulded the flaps and ailerons solidly with the wings, requiring some surgery if you want to pose them, too. In retrospect, I’m wishing I had gone that extra mile to cut them. In my pic above with the plane taking off, the ailerons are correctly posed, but the wing flaps are in the neutral position! tsk…tsk.
