Have you built the Tamiya kit? If so, I’d like to hear your thoughts comparing them.
fantastic work and I love the pilot figure. it really adds depth and scale to the model.
I have never heard of “Special Hobby” what are their kits like?
I do have Tamiya’s Emil. I bought it for some small parts I lost off the Special Hobby one. Tamiya’s model is MUCH cheaper, but lacks some of the finess of Special Hobby’s. Tamiya made a HUGE error in their kit…they modelled the canopy in two pieces; the windshield, which is fine, but then they combined the opening part of the canopy with the rear part, which doesn’t open. Not a problem if you want to model the aircraft with the canopy closed (but then they could have made the entire canopy in one piece). Since I had plans for this “doner” kit, I carefully separated the conjoined parts of the canopy with a razor saw because I wanted it opened. I’m making a small dio of a crashed Me-109 during the Battle of Britain. I Dremelled out the interior of wings and fuselage and made lots of battle damage, modified the engine compartment (pretty un-detailed), thinned out the edges and sides of the plastic so I could insert the optional, and well-detailed, engine from the Special Hobby Me-109, with the engine cover knocked off so the engine is visible. I heated and bent the propeller blades as they are always bent backwards due to wheels-up crash-landings. Got Eduards interior PE ready to go. Just have to order some printed figures of the captured pilot being led away by British Home Guards.
Anyway, back to Tamiya’s quality. Except for the stupidity of the canopy, it’s decently detailed, reasonably accurate, inexpensive, and with some AM help, will make a nice shelf model.

Special Hobby do some awesome kits. Their 1/72 Super Mystere, Mirage III and F1 kits at gorgeous. Beautiful mouldings and loads of optional ordnance.
Special Hobby kits are produced in Czech Republic, and are comparable to Eduard, and Arma quality, although newer releases are better than previous ones. They make mainly aircraft models (1/72, 1/48), armor (1/72), and ships (1/144).

@Klaus-Adler David have you been living under a rock?
From their About us page,
“Since its founding in 1989, Special Hobby s.r.o. (L.T.D) has evolved and is still developing. They react to the changing conditions on the market and also to the demands and wishes of business partners and modellers. On January 1, 2016, the company changed its name to Special Hobby s.r.o. (L.T.D.). On one hand, it was necessary to make sure customers don’t confuse us with other companies with similar names. On the other, we wanted to highlight the name of Special Hobby as the most popular of our product lines. Today, Special hobby makes injected model kits in the following product lines: Special Hobby (aircraft), Special Armour (military vehicles) and Special Navy (ships and submarines). The CMK product line makes resin accessories, models and figures not only for Special Hobby but also for kits of other brands. Right now, Special Hobby has about 40 full-time employees who try their hardest to fullfill the wishes of customers all around the world. Every year the company visits the Toy fair in Nürnberg, IPMS expositions in the USA and we also go to shows throughout Europe.”
Oh they do attend the IPMS Telford Nationals here in the UK alongside Eduard each November.
Part of Special Hobby’s group are the following companies;
Azur
MPM
CMK
Special Armor
Special Navy
FRROM
Planet models
And others
I guess so coz I’ve never heard of ‘em.
I guess I’m a Tamiya guy who occasionally walks on the wild side and buys an Academy kit ![]()
