That sounds like something that happened to the infamous Kampfgruppe Peiper. Especially if US Army Engineers were involved.

I can’t say off the top of my head when or where specifically during the German offensive phase of the Bulge that the incident occurred, but yes, it was involving US Army Combat Engineers. It’s been a few years since I’ve read any of my books on the battle.
