A GI poses on the Great Stone Dragon at the “Nibelungenhalle” in Königswinter, North Rhine-Westphalia Germany - 1945

Opened in 1913, on the 100th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth, the Nibelungenhalle celebrated the works of one of Germany’s most beloved sons.

Added in 1933 and connected to the rear of the hall is the “Dragon’s Den,” a mossy grotto that contains a huge stone dragon protecting its cave, echoing the beast that was killed by the mythic Siegfried.

If anyone. who is familiar with the Nibelungenlied legend, know if the dragon Fafnir was a winged dragon (like Smaug, of the Hobbit, LOTR), or wingless (like Glaurung [a worm] of the Simarillion)?

AFAIK the Nibelungenlied speaks of a Lindwurm. Lindwurm is a wingless “dragon”, more a giant lizard.

Thanks! :+1:
