I’ve built a few Leopards, would like to build more, but have come to dislike multi-piece link tracks. Ideally, I’d like something like Dragon DS. The ones on my MTB-70 look pretty darn good after painting and weathering. Does anyone offer this in the aftermarket? Are there any Leopard 2 kits with band type treads?
The MBT-70 tracks “look” like modern tracks but I have not confirmed if usable on current types or models.
I know for sure that the original Italeri Leo 2 kit comes with band tracks.
Maybe the Hobby Boss series of Leo 2 have some as well.
You can have a look at the content of each box at scalemates website.
They do look like Leopard 2 tracks, but they’re not the same.
If you’re willing to pay for postage, I’ll happily send you some sets of modern tracks I have that I’ll never use for anything myself. Send me a private message (click on my name at the top of this message to do that) if you’re interested.
… which are among the nastiest tracks ever made. So stiff that they form a circle regardless of the existence of anything trivial like running gear, and in two parts just to make your life fully unbearable. I bought AFV Club tracks to replace them, and at three parts per link and largely a push fit, they’re no trouble to use.
Hehe oh the Italeri M4a1!!,Definately needs the sprocket and idler beefed up with brass rod reinforcements,A guy at our club is building one and i told him the pitfalls.Oh you can do the tracks he said,Then again some of the older Italeri Leopard 1A4s have really tight tracks and ive learnt the hardway.Lets just say 2 hulls trashed when i lost it totally hehe!!!
It wasn’t my first 1:35 scale, or 1:35 scale tank, but I still have those very hard black tracks in one of my spares boxes. The more recent reissues have somewhat more flexible ones, but I discovered not long after my Back to the Eighties Sherman kitbash that the more modern version of those tracks breaks after a while
Not to mention that the track was so tough that it would pull the sprocket rings off the sprocket hubs, especially if you used the ones with the star-shaped opening instead of the round one.
They aren’t band tracks, but there are some 2A7 individual link tracks on Cults3D.com for 3D printing that are one piece links, much simpler than built-up kit links.
The tracks in Tamiya’s Leo2A5 and A6 kits are one piece, well done and glueable with regular cement, making it possible to shorten them if necessary for a good fit.
Well, I buckled down and spent a solid eight hours building two comple track for my KF71 project! Whew! Tedious, but worth it. BUT, thank you for this information rfbaer, I can now try to source a couple of sets from Tamiya. I’ve got three more tanks that use these type tracks and my time is too precious to use building more track!! Cheers!!
Oh, another couple of tips: First, don’t do separate-link tracks all at once, and second, don’t leave them until the rest of the model is done. If you clean up and build the tracks while you’re working on the rest of the model, too, it feels like much less of a chore.
