Randy L Harvey reviews the book, British Tanks of the Red Army, from Gallantry Books by author Peter Samsonov with profile artwork by Thierry Vallet, cover art by Piotr Forkasiewicz and photographers Pierre-Olivier Buan and Pavel Borovikov.
If I recall correctly, for some reason the Russians really liked the Valentine. After the British decided to cease production, they actually kept the production line going just for the Russians.
I think you are correct, but it was the Canadian rather than the British production line which was kept going. The vast majority of Canadian production went to Russia, all but 32 of the 1420 produced going directly there while the few remaining stayed in Canada. I’ve also heard that despite being designed as a low-speed Infantry (support) Tank the Soviets also used it in the breakthrough/exploitation role because of it’s reliability; if there was one thing the Russians appreciated in a tank it was the ability to road-march long distances.
