When the key was inserted into the ignition, it went into the right side of the steering column like any other civilian Chevy truck of the time. Additionally, there were two keys for the CUCVs (and civilian Chevys) at the time, one for the ignition (square key) and one for the door locks (round key).
Mine were always welded to the floor right in front of the driver, relatively centered on the bottom most arc of the steering wheel.
Found these on the interwebs when I was building my Miniman Factory M1008 CUCV.

Interior is ready to be buttoned up. Quick pin wash and dust effect nothing serious. I used AK clear water to replicate the dial faces
Need to find a copy of a Canadian MP log book, and a FAL + Sterling SMG
Very nice. The detail painting on the cab interior looks great.
That interior is looking REAL!
Camo is on. Might be a touch on the light side with the modulation but after a filter and weathering it should darken into a nicely faded truck
Nice faded look.
Exhaust painted and installed. Side mirrors also painted a slightly different shade of green. Not sure if I want to mount the cab and box to the frame before or after weathering .
It’s been a while but I have made some progress on this. Just need to get the finishing touches and I will get some better photos.
Very nice. It is coming along great. I find it interesting that the model comes w/nothing under the hood, no engine blank, nothing. I plan to add a 3D printed engine and compartment details on mine.
Omitting an engine blanking plate and the spare tire seems like an odd choice from AK. The exhaust stacks running into empty space got a good chuckle from me
Omitting …the spare tire seems like an odd choice…
I found that odd as well. 3D printing to the rescue again.
An insidious plan to get you to purchase the separate engine later on.
Can’t wait for an IPMS judge to pick it up and dock points for no engine
Very nice. It looks great.
Excellent job.
