would you hit your figure with a gloss coat prior to applying the very tiny uniform insignia decals?then a flat in the same fashion as vehicles?
Sounds reasonable.
It depends on the insignia. Often the decal on the uniform doesn’t look right because it has no thickness to it. In many cases it looks better to cut out the decal, color the edge with the appropriate color, and glue the decal, paper and all to the uniform. And yes, it needs a flat coat afterwards,
A good idea. Indeed decals are very thin.
I will try this way for next time.
thats an interesting technique, but it wont work when it has to conform to detail or curves
No, it won’t. Hence me saying:
It depends on the insignia. Often the decal on the uniform doesn’t look right because it has no thickness to it.
Unit patches are especially thick:
"It depends on the insignia. Often the decal on the uniform doesn’t look right because it has no thickness to it.

Yeah…but how thick is 1/8" in 1/35 scale?

I wouldn’t have thought it necessary to do math for a Canadian. Aren’t you guys higher than the OECD average?
But since you ask - it would be .00357142857. Can we agree to round to say… .0036 inch?
A sheet of Georgia-Pacific Standerd Multipurpose Paper is .004 inch. So, using like math and stuff (and simply looking at the above photo) I’d say you can see the thickness of a unit patch.
Actual measurement of a unit patch was slightly more than 1/8 by the way. And name tapes, where they’re double up on the end, are .180 in, significantly more than .125.

Archer makes some fabric decals for patches. You can feel the raise decal in 1/35. Not easy to photograph to show that it’s raised.
Those look great. I think I’ve seen a few used in contests in the past few years. Unfortunately for me, no SF patches. You can definitely see the thickness to modern patches, even in 1/35.
And while the IR flag is thinner than a patch, I wouldn’t want to use a decal of it. It’s simply too stiff. Again, cut it out, paint edges, only for these use gloss coat.
Same for IR team numbers on left sleeve - too rigid for decal.
But you know the old saying: Build it the way you want to.
Flying planes ! Man , what don’t you do ?
I am guessing an email with examples might generate a new sheet. I would think that would be a successful sheet given the number of SF figures and kits available.
I helped Archer with the M113 placards, but I thought they went Tango Uniform.
Depending on technical you want to be yes they did but they are back.
“I wouldn’t have thought it necessary to do math for a Canadian. Aren’t you guys higher than the OECD average?”
That was a rhetorical question…I wasn’t thinking I would have had to explain that! …but there’s always someone. ![]()
