My motivation was mostly because of the effects of age, poor storage and many moves to new places to live - dust, dirt, cobwebs, small damage here and there. Those old dioramas were the final survivors of the work I did as a teenager in the '70s, so I wanted to preserve them as close to original as possible. The work to clean them was unfortunately also destructive to the most delicate parts, specifically the ground cover and vegetation.
At any rate, I’m not sure how to classify the work. Perhaps more as “restoration” and “conservation”? However, it did require total replacement of some of the original materials with newer materials, so I suppose “update” is a fair description of the outcome and result.
At any rate, within reason, the bases, figures and model elements can withstand what might seem to be very heavy work (as long as you’re willing to do the inevitable additional repairs).

Actually, I did earlier this year. There were several spaces I wasn’t happy with in the diorama so I filled them after a few years. Usually I bung them in the bin due to lack of space but have kept this one. More years of modeling, modifying figures and more inspiration helped.
