Fortress in the Sky: The B-17 at 90

Would love to join but I have a monogram B 17 G that I have been trying to finish for 15 years. Last year I got motivated and worked on it and completed the fuselage with the exception of painting the Ball turret. Now I just need to paint the wings and get those attached. If I manage to finish this anytime soon, I might jump in on this group build with a second monogram B 17G.

Happy new year to you and yours

Happy new year to all.

well. Then I’ll start and present my project.
In the campaign I build ‘Little Miss Mischief’ in 1:48.
For me, the special thing about this particular aircraft is its special appearance. After an attack on Cologne in 1944, the natural metal-finished plane was so badly damaged that it was decided to replace the rear part of the aircraft with that of another in order to make it airworthy again. The donor aircraft was Olive Drab.
If you want to know more details, you can find them here:
[42-97880 / Little Miss Mischief | B-17 Bomber Flying Fortress – The Queen Of The Skies)

The early B-17G from HKM is best suited for construction. After looking in the box, I really like the kit. But more details don’t hurt either.
So the kit comes with tires without tread. Research by me shows that this machine had tires with Diamand pattern. For this I found the nice set ‘B-17F/G Flying Fortress Wheels with Weighted Tires Type C (RA)’ from Armory Models.

Here is the listing of aftermarket products i plan to use:

Armory B-17F/G Flying Fortress Wheels with Weighted Tyres Type C (RA)
Artscale B-17G Flying Fortress outside
painting mask HK Model
Eduard Eduard Accessories - B-17G cockpit for HKM
Eduard Eduard Accessories - B-17G nose interior for
HKM
Eduard Eduard Accessories - B-17G antiglare panels (VE production) for HKM
HGW Models B-17 Flying Fortress - Seatbelts
HGW Models B-17 WOODEN FLOORS + AMMO BOXES - LIGHT WOOD
Master Model Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - machine gun set
PYN-up Decals Decals B-17 Boeing Babes Part 4 Little Miss Mischief Limited Edition of 300
SBS B-17G Early Production Bombardier position & Chin turret
Master Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - machine gun set

We’ll see about the accuracy of the fit later.
Here are some pictures to show what it is about, that the build isn’t startet right now and the start time.

Happy modelling

Quite the collection, Harald! Should make for a beautiful model.

I’m planning on essentially an HK kit as well, but re-packaged by Eduard. Basically out of the box (but of course with the Eduard goodies):

I will be adding Kit’s World seat cusions for the pilot and co-pilot. They and some Bronze Green paint are on order from KitLinx, so I have to wait for them to get started, but they should be here soon(ish).

I also have the issue of the kit with the “bonus” decals for four more options, but as I’m planning on doing Rosie’s Rivetters, which is in the regular batch, I’ll have more for the stash, I guess. As far as I’m concerned, aside from the build options, the biggest plus of the Eduard edition is the mask set. There are a lot of tricky clear bits in the B-17, and I’d hate to tackle them without those masks!

That looks like it’s going to be a fantastic project! Good luck with it.

We were putting the Christmas decorations away in the attic today and I came across a couple of my B-17 stash.

The Academy F I’ve had for years (in fact all but the Airfix are Academy). My intention was to build it as ‘The 8 Ball’, one of the aircraft Clarke Gable flew unofficially on while making training films for the air gunnery school.
And their E, which I wanted to build as Gene Roddenberry’s aircraft. I need to go through my decals to find the sheet with those aircraft on.

Somewhere are another couple. The Coastal Command Fortress II and Italeri’s rebox of the Fortress I.

Many interessing options and difficult to decide. I would chosse the Fortress MKII from Costal Command with a nose lengths in front of ‘The 8 Ball’.
Color pattern beats History

Good luck

+1 It helpes a lot if the kit comes with those extras. That’s why i bought the masking sets as well. It will be still fiddly enough.
Thanks for your hint regarding Kit’s Word seat cusions. First i will try to do them myself. But if this doesn’t work i will by this set. May be together with their 3D-Decal set for B17-G because i am not realy satisfied with Eduard’s cockpit set.

Good luck
Harald

I like your thinking. If I can find the Fortress I even better. One of the options on that is dark green/earth over azure blue. And an early tail B-17 would be a great addition to the campaign.

I found this very small 2 piece modell of a flying fortress , maybe i could do that.

LOL I expect you will surely be the first one then to run over the finish line with this “model”

That could be a great diorama , there is also a Mustang, a tempest and a thunderbolt .

Beauty! 1/700th? Good luck with nose art!

That’s a interesting Suggestion  .

I have bought the old 1:72 Revell B17 two times in my Life, maybe it is time for a good one …

For those of you who have used Tamiya’s rattlecan bare metal color, how did you seal the decals? I like the sheen it has and do not wish to wreck this look.
