FW 190 F-8 Build log

it’s been a while but i did manage to move along on the build. after filling and sanding the wing root smooth i primed in white, sprayed the rlm 04 yellow on the cowl then masked that off in preparation for the camo. i then dropped it and cracked the join on the left wing root. i will have to re putty and sand. damn hands not working right anymore!!

i decided to try some pre shading. i have only tried this a couple of times with not great results, i tend to end up spraying too much paint and wiping it out. i used some extra dark sea grey for the shading and i did a decent job of spraying straight lines for a change.

next color is the rlm 76, i will be using hataka’s orange line lacquer for it. i like these paints but it is hard to find the individual bottles now since sprue brothers has stopped stocking them.
the next problem i will have is the rlm 83 dark green. the eduard instructions call for it but there is much confusion as to what color it actually was. i came across some research on verde9.com which is convincing to the fact that it was probably a dark blue used for maritime aircraft not dark green. there may have been a second version of rlm 81 that is being confused with rlm 83.
i compared the rlm 82 i have to the camo color in the instructions and it looks pretty close to what eduard shows as rlm 83. here is some i painted on a sprue as a test comparison to what i seen on verde9.

if there is anyone here that has any input on this i would like to hear it because i am leaning towards using the 82 instead of the 83 but i like to be as accurate as possible. ak real colors makes a rlm 81 version 2 that is a dark green that is supposed to be the color confused with rlm 83 but i don’t think i want to spend the money if i can’t see what the shade of the paint is.

got the rlm 76 and sprayed duraluminum on the bare metal under wing. still undecided on what to do about the rlm 83

getting closer to the finish. got all the camo sprayed just have to go back and do some touch up. my airbrush got quite a workout, rlm 76,75,04, 81 brown violet and rlm 81 v2. the directions call for rlm 83 dark green but this is incorrect. 83 is actually a blue. the green is actually rlm 81 version 2. ak real color makes it but i decided to mix my own. i decanted some tamiya AS24 dark green and mixed in a couple drops of black then added light grey drop by drop till i matched a color chip of ak’s rlm 81 v2 i found on line.

just about time for some decals soon.

anyone know if the blown canopy, which was used on the doras and some 190 F’s as what my build calls for, would have the tensioner for the atena or would it just fall slack when the canopy was opened like it did with the doras? i know all dora
canopies had no tensioners so it would make sense to me that what 190 F’s that used them would also have none but i want to make sure first.
thanks- Joe

Decals done!!!

I’m really happy how it has turned out so far.

Hi, looking excellent. Forgive the question but how different is an F-8 from an A-8?

not much. i/m no expert either but i think the biggest difference was strengthening the frame to support the weight of the ordnance and maybe an upgrade to the engine. also i believe they omitted the outer wing cannon and hard points/racks for the bombs.

Hi, thanks l didn’t think it could be much because Airfix offer an A-8/F-8 in the same box, not too much external differences l think. Fancied building Border’s 1/35 but always wanted to build a picture l saw as a kid of an F-8 with a 1000kg bomb
