German M48A2CG to Magach?

There were not many changes on the vehicles made prior to the start of the Magach 3 program, just the searchlight mount and the socket for the wire on the turret roof. Some field modifications could include light arm mounts on the turret roof and stowage holders.

This is a rough sketch for the searchlight mount

Notice the early antenna mounts, not the spring ones, similar to those seen on M46

One detail that I have not found in photos is a type of IFF contraption installed on the vehicles’ antennas during the Six Day War, all photos are censored.

On the headlights, those were the same all around. The A2CG/ CG2
had additional (small) lights on the front fenders (par # 76) and on the rear fender (#66 and #67). Also the convoy light (#40. shield shaped gizmo, center rear. Has a white cross. The center is a low watt bulb that illuminates the cross so it is visible a close range. )

Searchlights were French, I believe. Look to be the same as on the M51 Shermans. US was using the Crouse-Hinds lights at the time, wider front to rear.

The above were all West German features added to their version. The G in M48A2CG/A denotes the West German version.

@gtdeath13 Thank you for those plans, notes, and photos.

Using this new information, I now see the Dragon Magach 1/2 has three mounting tabs on the mantlet for a search light mounting plate as described in your drawing.

Both the Dragon Machach 1/2 and Revel M48A2CG have a port on top of the turret that must serve as the power connection point for the search light. German tanks have a shot deflector in front of this port.

As best I can tell, German and Israeli vehicles mount antennas in the same two places on the turret. I am seeing two or maybe three different antenna bases. The Dragon model has one style. The Revel model a different style. In photos, some antennas seem to have a third style with a very slender base.

The Revell M48A2CG seems to have correct fender boxes and tools for an Israeli vehicle.

Some German vehicles have rear view mirrors mounted on the fenders. That may be a feature of later M48s. These do not appear in the Revell M48A2CG.

Turning a Revell M48A2CG into a Magach 2 now seems very doable with some minor scratch building.

Magach 1 should not have those, that is a mistake by Dragon.

One is early american, one is late American (the typical spring we all know) and the other is German.

They were added after the conversion with the German L7 version, the M48A2GA2

Thats kinda what we were talking about. Differences between US A2s and German A2CG and A2CG2.

I’d guess they were the same as used on the AMX-13. IDF might have filtched them from he ones they had.

Think the rearviews were added during the upgrade to A2CG2. They are the same as used on the Leo 1s, as is the 105mm and cupola. CG2s were to be used by reserve Abt. until enough Leos were built to provide regular units and reserve

@gtdeath13 Thank you again, Nikos.

@Stikpusher Excellent. Thank you. I am still fuzzy on some details but the situation is improving.

@sluff That is a really useful site. Thank you for reminding me. If time permits, I want to build a Takom M48A3 for the Vietnam campaign.

I guess it could be a PH-2-A model, also used on the AMX-13

Inspiration for a Vietnam A3.

Could also do an Arvin M48. Star Decals has a sheet with the markings. (Also have ones with Arvin M41s, M113s) Happy Turkey Day! :turkey: (If there really were Indians at the first Thanksgiving how come we are not eating curry turkey with cranberry chutney?)

How did one of my old bosses put it… with a feather or a dot?

Before anyone gets all up in arms about cultural insensitivity, I’ve got a good percentage of Native American blood/DNA… just from tribes south of this side of the current border… :smirk:

'Course, until the late 1840s the "southern border " was up around Denver! I’m half Quebecois. Refer to my moms side of the family as “snowbacks”. Tobogganed across the St. Lawrence. (Other half is Irish, soooo …)
