Help with TUSK II Connections

Hi All,

I am building the 1/35 RFM M1A2 SEP TUSK II. I am having a problem figuring out how to complete the connections on top of the turret and the gun mantlet. Part J43 is supposed to connect between the mantlet and the fixed part of the front of the turret, that is, between parts J30 and J40. I see that the long thin part of J43 slides into the hole at the front of part J40. But it is not clear at all how the ‘front’ part of J43 is supposed to connect to, or interface with, part J30 where both sit on top of part F28. I’ve looked at photos of other people’s models in this area, and it doesn’t ‘t help me much, and though I have many books about the tank, I can’t find a single photo of these parts on the real tank.

I’ve included sections of pages 6 and 8 of the instructions below, and outlined in red the areas where the parts are located and where the instructions (poorly) indicate how they are supposed to connect (in step A-5). How are J43 and J30 supposed to connect? There doesn’t seem to be a well thought out or molded ‘connection area’. Also, it appears as if J43 is supposed to lie completely flat against part F28 and against the top pf the turret as the long thin part of J43 travels over the joint between F28 and onto the top of the turret. There is a pin on the underside of J43 where it appears that it is supposed to intersect with J30 (and M10 is a flat piece of photoetch which provides a smooth transition between F28 and the top of the turret). That pin on J43 does not appear to have a corresponding hole on part J30. So, bottom line, PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thank you!

Wow! Thanks a bunch!! You did a great job. It appears that the Rye Field instructions shows that part J30 should be installed wrong, with the ‘dog leg’ to the left instead of the right. Then, part J43 was molded incorrectly, since the ‘anchor’ that needs to fit onto the rear part of F28 is wayyyyy too far rearward. I guess some plastic surgery is necessary to fix their errors. This is the first time that I have found RFM plastic and instructions to be this wrong!! Thank you again!!

By the way…SPECTACULAR work on the TUSK mods to your Abrams!! Did you create all those details from scratch, or is there some aftermarket kit that includes those details?

I used voyager etching and homemade parts

I don’t think Rye Field got the position of part J30 wrong. Photos show the ‘dog leg’ could be installed either going to the left or to the right.

Thanks, guys! Good to know that part J30 could be installed in either direction! Thanks for the comment, and for the addition photos! There just aren’t that many photos or even drawings that show those connections, probably because not all that many TUSK installations were actually done (I’m guessing). In any event, I’m thrilled that I’ve got the info I need to proceed with my tank build!
