Seems to me, that this is ideal for the Airborne units. By combining the howitzer on to an air droppable HUMMV you eliminate the headache of moving the canon. This isn’t a long range weapon, more of a short to medium range. Also sounds like a great weapon for the Marines to land on the beach.
Regardless of howitzer type, ammo resupply has always been an issue. Long range artillery has the advantage of being far enough in the rear that truck convoys of ammo is just part of the logistics. The closer to the front the more vulnerable the resupply trucks become and the tactical challenges become. Therefore, having these in an air assault means they will be on or adjacent to the front lines. Airborne units would have to have ammo dropped off and several resupply HUMMV’s would need to ferry ammo to the guns.
Could be we are close to the point Artillery, like armor is fading and the era of the drone as a replacement is dawning.
