HMS Ajax

Having received my Flyhawk kit of Ajax I was looking at the what I think is some sort of ant slip texture on the bow and it looks way over scaled.

I can’t find any references of what Ajax or Achilles had but I’m sure Flyhawk have this wrong.

What do you think

Cheers

It’s possible, but sanding down the texture without damaging the rest of the deck hardware is very difficult.

I left it as is.

Well I have to remove the molded on chain to be replaced by a real chain anyway.

Thanks for your reply

I removed the chain. With a small homemade chisel.

You’re welcome.

The 1:192 scale plan drawn by Norman A. Ough back in 1961 shows the same pattern as the Flyhawk kit. Mr Oughs plan shows 5 complete and two partial squares between the rear ends of the hawse holes.

I can scan that part of the drawing and post it later.
There are some other differences as well.
I can NOT guarantee that Mr Ough used original plans. He drew that scale plan some years before I was born …

Thanks Robin

If the pattern is the same I’m happy with that, but in 1/700 scale I think the pattern might be a little too deep.

I’ll placed one of my 1/700 ION figures on it later and take a photo, I reckon he’d be half way up his leg in the pattern.

Found the Plans for Ajax and the pattern is correct.

Yup.
Those short planks representing anti slip patterns are WAY too large.
Assume the real strips are 7 mm high and 21 mm wide,
the 1/700 strips would be 0.01 mm high and 0.03 mm wide.

Maybe, possibly, if you could print the pattern to that size on decal sheet the raised ink might be about correct in size.

Looks like the plan I have.
Do you want a larger version?
If I scan it 1 to 1 it will be a bit over 90 mm from stem to the wooden deck.

I got the wood veneer decking for this kit too and I thought there might of been a photo etch replacement for her steel reinforced bow.

Pity having the deluxe kit with all the bells and whistles and now needs redoing the bow plate.

Not going to be an easy fix apart from sanding it down a bit.

Cheers

No only this one.

If you could Robin that would be great.

Didn’t you used to do armour models years ago?

Not really been in this site for quite some years as when Jim switched over to the new forum I lost all my post and photos as I imagine most others too.

That is the Ough plan but my copy does not have the big stamp all over it.
I’ll scan it.

Yes, I try to model armour but family and other commitments are taking my spare time.
I do have an interest in ships but I restrict myself to 1/72 scale, preferably with radio control.

This is what it should look like, so it’s similar

Wow it looks like 1/24th diamond plate . WTF is up with this?

The corresponding deck area on HMS Belfast.

This was the clearest photo I could find (quick search), the pattern was less
visible, almost invisible, on the other photos.

Great photos there

Definitely needs sanding down, just hope I can go around the raised details without ruining them.

I just took a look at my Flyhawk Ajax and it looks like the anti-slip pattern might diminish a bit under a coat (or two) of paint.
 :canada:

Primer, a coat or two of paint, varnish.
