KrAZ-255B (Hobby Boss)
I’m starting a new project — the KrAZ-255B from Hobby Boss — with the goal of building an authentic, accurate model as close to the real vehicle as possible, not just an out-of-the-box assembly.
I’ve done the preliminary chassis build, and here’s what we’ve got so far:
-
The kit is missing several frame cross-members, so I scratch-built them.
-
The winch also required upgrades: I added missing details and made a driveshaft for it, which surprisingly isn’t included in the kit.
-
There’s another cross-member missing at the front of the frame — also scratch-built.
-
The rear suspension is assembled without glue and is fully functional; everything moves as on the real truck.
-
I still need to add the hydraulic lines. The kit lacked one of the air tanks, so I made a replacement — it turned out slightly oversized, but I decided to keep it.
-
The front suspension is also fully workable, with a functional steering axle.
-
I’ve done a test build of the engine. Just like with the suspension, some parts are simply not there: no fan and no two filters, so these will need to be scratch-built as well.
Overall, the kit is somewhat better and at the same time somewhat worse compared to the Roden KrAZ I built earlier. Different manufacturers — but in the end, the same story: good bones, but a lot of work needed to bring it to a proper level.
More updates soon.
