Land Wasser Schlepper?

Hi does anyone know what the rectangular upright at the front is for? Nothing is modeled from the kit on the inside , so whats its purpose?

It is a kind of ‘conning tower’. It allows the crew commander to see and not get wet or fall overboard when the craft is travelling in water. It is quite low when afloat and motion can make waves that go over the top hatches just in front:

Think of it in terms of the tube they put on a tank turret’s cupola.

Are you sure it’s not an air intake?

Yes, it allowed air in naturally, as does the tube on the tank, but it served the same purpose as the the production LWS which had a platform inside for the crewman to stand on:

I did know the standard LWS has that lookout position in the air intake, but on the LWS II — of which, I admit, I know very little — it doesn’t give me the impression it’s also intended for that purpose. It seems rather tall to climb into or out of, for example, without any kind of steps on or in it.
