I am looking for information on the USMC M1240 M-ATV. Did the USMC use the DUKE 2 antenna, the fall over antenna mount and the Rhino? Some photos I found shows those specific parts and said they were USMC but I am not sure if the descriptions are accurate or not.
The US Army usually has ID markings on the side of the door starting in an “M” and unit markings on the front bumper. I have noticed some M-ATV’s don’t have any markings at all. Here are some US Army M-ATV’s with ID markings. The first image shows the ID on the door. The second one shows the unit on the bumper and you can barely see the markings on the side of the door.
These below, the descriptions say they are USMC but they have the same ID markings on the side of the door as the US Army M-ATV’s have. They do look faded as if they tried to remove them. Are these borrowed from the US Army or given to the USMC from US Army stocks?
The first one you can see they are wearing desert MARPAT and the description says, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Combat Outpost Ouellette, Helmand province, Afghanistan, March 17, 2011. The second image is cropped and zoomed in and you can see the original US Army style marking on the door. Looks like the ID is MYODJS. This specific vehicle has the DUKE 2 antenna, the fall over antenna mount and the Rhino.
This one also said USMC but I forgot to save the original description. The second image is also cropped and zoomed in to show the original US Army marking on the side of the door. This one is more faded though and harder to see. Looks like the ID is MYOJZA. This vehicle also has the DUKE 2 antenna, the fall over antenna mount, Rhino and the Boomerang sniper detection system..
A little late response, but yes all those M-ATV pics that you’re questioning are early USMC. They’re from 2011 in Afghanistan. In one you can also make out the crew in MARPAT. The “M” number was also repeated on the left rear bumper.
I’m not an expert on the subject, going from pics I’ve seen, by around 2012 there seemed to be a mix of USMC M-ATVs in Afghanistan with this type of marking and the standard “USMC-” marking numbers on the hood. Others also had only the number in larger sized stencil on the hood (no “USMC”). Here’s example from late 2012:
Jan 26, 2011 A Mine Resistant Armor Protected All Terrain Vehicle belonging to Company L, Battalion Landing Team 3/8, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Regimental Combat Team 2, prepares to leave friendly lines on a convoy in the Helmond province, Afghanistan, Jan. 26, 2011. Elements of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to Afghanistan to provide regional security in Helmand province in support of the International Security Assistance Force.
I am planning to make one as USMC. Deciding on which one from these two. The one with the Boomerang sniper detection might be the one but I need to find a Boomerang set.
Found another M-ATV that has the DUKE 2 antenna and the fall over antenna mount on Wikipedia with the description saying USMC. Wikipedia isn’t the best source but the uniform looks like desert MARPAT from what I can see.
An Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) belonging to F Battery 2/12, Battalion Landing Team 3/8, 26th marine Expeditionary Unit, Regimental Combat Team 2, is being towed by a Mine Resistant Armor Protected All-Terrain Vehicle aboard Combat Outpost Ouellette, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Jan. 29, 2011. This is the first time that EFSS has been employed in Afghanistan. Elements of 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to Afghanistan to provide regional security in Helmand Province in support of the International Security Assistance Force.
