M1A1 vs M1A1 HA

Hello:

I want to know if there any external -or visible- differences between the M1A1 and the M1A1 HA tanks.

Also, the marines M1A1 deployed in Desert Storm used the APU in the turret bascket?

Hope someone can help.

Best regards.

I believe that they used different tracks. Due to the increased weight of the heavy armor, the HA variant introduced the T-158 “Bigfoot” tracks. The original M1A1 had the rubber chevron T-156 tracks.

I drew a brand new M1A1 in 1987 and we had the original chevron tracks and we had nothing but problems with them. I think the A1 series were just too heavy for that track.

The major external differences between the M1A1 and M1A1HA are the doghouse and tracks. (Gunner’s Sight) The M1A1 has a slanted back and the HA has a square back. The original A1 will have either T156 or T158 track depending on when it was installed. HA tanks will have T158 Track. Desert painted HAs will have the right grill door painted black. European HAs can be painted straight green with tanks being painted in 93 to nato 3 color for 3ID. Very early A1s may be missing the oil cooler hatches on the back deck and the manhole for the CITV. Also A1 will have the side loading grenade storage cover and the HA will have the top loading storage.
