Were they painted at the factory before they were shipped out?
If so would the spares on the hull sides also have a coat of paint?

I’ve always assumed they came with some kind of protective coating, which of course wears off in use.

It is my understanding that the tracks were bare manganese steel castings. Sometimes they were treated with a light oil or cosmoline-type preservative. Occasionally mill scale or black oxide from heat treatment was visible.
