M60A1 equipt. ID "box on the rear"

I found this image on Prime portal, while doing a search for M60A1 images during Desert Storm and wondered what it is for?
I have seen such parts being included in various 1/35 Abrams-kits too, but can not find anything on what it is for.
Any help would be really appreciated!!

I teased this earlier, but I didn’t want to announce it until I knew it was finished, correct, and printable. Well now that it is, I’m more than happy to present the Cleared LAne Marking System or CLAMS. I have this modeled in 1/35 for the M60 but I do plan on doing the mount for the Abrams as well. It’s a CLAMS marker.

Or Cleared LAne Marking System. It was attached to the rear of Army and Marine tanks fitted with mine plows and rakes, it would drop banners to marked cleared lanes for other vehicles to cross through.

An upgraded version is OEM on the M1150 ABV.
