A quickie: what time period would these guys be appropriate for?
From 2003 to the present; their uniforms were using solid khaki coveralls for Op Telic (Operation Iraqi Freedom for the US); then transitioned to the MTP pattern in 2010, which was fielded in Afghanistan.
Thank you. I’m looking for appropriate figs for a Cr1/Op Granby and a Cr2 in Kosovo.
They are suitable for an Op Telic crew but not Op Granby as they weren’t on issue at that time. RTR wear Black coveralls in camp and on ranges but I think they change them for exercise/operations/
Are the helmets right for Op Granby then? I’m gathering if so, I could simply paint the coveralls khaki and use them in a Cr1 I’m gathering parts for. They look like the fig in the Tamiya Cr1 Mk3 desertized kit, except for the coveralls IIRC
BTW, I’ve ordered a bunch of goodies from SMM, seems like it would be pointless to scratch build yet another turret rear bin… two was plenty.
As Max said, black denims in camp and ranges and change into the above for Ops and exercise… although I wouldn’t be surprised if one or 2 of the old and bold still try and wear black if they deploy and can get away with it… old habits etc …
Russ @rfbaer the helmets would be ok for Granby or the set for a possible Cr2 in Kosovo.
I would steer away from using them for an Op Granby Cr1 as even if you just paint them in the old desert scheme, the visible differences are very standout… and as Max said, for that period, the one piece tank suit wasn’t fielded yet …
And even if you haven’t bought them yet, I would get them anyway as they seem quite hard to get hold of … well over here at least
Is there a special drill to look grumpy for photos?
Probably not having a proper “cuppa” before taking the picture… I know I’d look grumpy too without my morning Cup O’ Joe.
The Berlin crews certainly look a lot more chipper and carefree… mind you, saying that, the Cr2 crew know they have to do a complete track and sprocket ring change after the photo, hence the cheesed off look on most of them…
Well I’m gonna order them since they’re “scarce”. They’re located in Poland, should be a quick trip for you guys…
Can those figures be usted for a KFOR or IFOR tanks?
Dear God - I’d be bloody chipper and carefree if I was posted to Berlin! Living the dream and then some!
KFOR entered Kosovo in 1999 so they would have been on issue as I wore them in the winter of 98/99 in Bosnia whilst stationed in the Metal Factory. Whether they were worn or not by the tank crews though I don’t know. Maybe look for pics of the timeframe and see.
It’s possible IFOR/SFOR troops had them as they were initially issued in DPM as part of the combat 95 clothing issue which ironically I was issued in "96, however I wasn’t issued the coveralls at that time. So some time between my summer "96 tour and winter "98 tour I was issued them, and what a Gucci item they were.
So, not to pester, Mr Max, but how is your Challenger build coming? I got the first box of goodies from SMM today, more on the way, for “one more” build. The parts look really good.
I’m not building a Challenger at this time. I’ve got a bit of a building block going at the moment and my OCD side won’t let me start a new kit until the previous kit has been finished. The SMM kit has always been top notch when I’ve ordered it, waiting to see what they come out with for the Airfix Ferret.
