Mis-filed Armor Topic

Is it the creator of a news/review/feature that selects which category in the Site Content discussions forum that the post should end up in or does it follow automatically from some other action?

Would it be possible to choose more than one category or is this hard wired into Discourse?
I suspect it would not be possible to select more than one category for any post since that would defeat the purpose of the categories …

It’s automated and no you can’t select more than one category per topic.

Just as a I thought.
It does make sense.

One Discourse developers discussion concerning this:

@165thspc
Sam Saffron wrote this back in 2015:
“This is a completely impractical change that would cut deep into the internal structures in Discourse. The entire code base is designed around the concept that a topic has at most one category, changing this premise is very very unlikely to happen.”

We can just forget about it

Robin it does not/would not defeat anything.

It would improve readership as when a thread applies to more than one topic it would then get seen by more than one interested group.

But too that would also depend on the content creators using it properly! And I am sure many arguments would spring out of that but the Admins would have the final say on all that just as they do now.

Robin, thanks for asking the question but as Jim said the content creator can select ONLY ONE topic division for the thread to be placed under.

I really do not see a problem giving us the power to select two or more topic divisions at the time of creation but yes it would take a programmer extremely familiar with the Discourse software to make it happen.

Changing this would also require the approval of the Discourse “owners”.
Splitting off a specialised implementation results in maintenance work since
new development on the original branch would require copying/adaptation.
Making a fundamental change would increase the maintenance costs.

If you absolutely want this I suggest you take that discussion with Discourse “owners”,
maybe make a crusade out of it if you really really want it.
This site, or rather the forums, is based on Discourse since maintenance
of the old one, which also did NOT have the
feature you are looking for, was becoming a nightmare.
I strongly doubt that Jim would be willing to clear his own path and customise Discourse to
such a radical degree.

Read the discussions in the links I provided, or maybe just the quote in my previous post.

Forget it.
Ain’t
gonna
happen.

In the meantime:
Keep checking the Discourse discussions and
let us know if they suddenly change their minds

Nope. This does not work for me!

Radical?

“cut deep into the internal structures”
“entire code base is designed around the concept that a topic has at most one category”

That is radical enough for me with a background in programming, naval combat control systems, air defense control system and the training simulator. Hacked code in several programming languages
which makes me feel “entitled” to have a definite opinion about the difference between a small adjustment and a radical change.
I have not seen the Discourse code, I have no intention of doing so either and I most definitely do not have any intention whatsoever of modifying that code from the ground level and up.
Especially if the motive for doing so is only the opinion of another forum member.

Robin, is this a personal statement of your own or a quote picked up from somewhere else? If you truly have this level of experience and work history then I bow to what is clearly a greater knowledge of the subject than I possess.

However, with apologies to you, I will continue to remain skeptical on this subject.

The qoute in my previous post comes from an earlier post where I quoted Sam Saffron.
Sams words can be found in this discussion about this topic:

No need to apologise for having a different opinion.
The world would truly be a horrible place if everyone had the same
opinions about everything.
Opinions are free but facts are facts

Well you did make it sound like those words were coming from your mouth.

I have now added my comments to Mr. Saffron’s thread regarding Posting a Topic in Multiple Categories as it appears on the Discourse Meta site. If he responds I will certainly share it with the group here.

Good luck to You,
don Quixote  :+1:

I have proposed a way he MIGHT accomplish this without changing out the entire Discourse engine and driveline. Let us see how long it takes him to shut me down.

It was nice however, to see I was not the only lowly forum member who had the same idea.

But after all what do I know? I am just the end user, where the rubber meets the road!
