Modeling for allergy sufferers or... lazy people

Came across it by chance on the Internet.

Never seen anything like it before. Does anyone know where else I can see something like this?

I have never seen these either, but they look pretty nice. Not necessarily lazy as they take a bit of care to paint nicely when still on the sprue, especially in such a small scale. I really like the “Red Tails” one with the boxart (?, I think) behind it. They are a neat way to display them.

I have neither done nor seen that, but I have built two aircraft inside a shadow box - right and left fuselage with different markings on each side. It works much better with helicopters of planes with stubby wings such as the F-104.

You see, Mr. Spock, there is this thing called art…

Kinda funny. Just last night, I considered making a shadow box filled with 1/350 submarines.

Be interesting to make aircraft models with severely foreshortened wings designed for shadow box display. The only real issue is that the illusion will only hold when looking at the shadow box from dead ahead. Otherwise…Whoa. All those wingy thingys have stub wings. Weird.

Found a few more.

With submarines you wouldn’t get the same two for one effect that you do with aircraft - I doubt there are too many different marking options. But you could do two complete shadow boxes of different subs, one port, the other starboard, and give the second one away as a gift. That would be cool.

Imagine doing the same thing with a 1:35 scale military kit which has around 10 sprues !

Well that leaves out MiniArt kits.

If you know a modeler, this would be nice gift to make for them.

I’ve seen this done a few times. Often thought about having a go with one of the cheapo Airfix starters that Lidl seems to get in every so often. The idea I have is to include an old tube of glue, Humbrol paint tins and a couple of Airfix’s RAF ground crew man-handling a giant paint brush!

Tamiya seem to have a line of them, although not on sprue…

Always wanted to build the Konica Minolta bike, but if I could find a kit would consider this!;

Steele Wheels in Halifax, NS. Check the sprues on the side of the building.

They had a Rolling Stones exhibit a few months back which was pretty cool.

Evil intrusive thoughts:
Get some cheap 1/72 airplane kits and then mix the sprues.
The Spitfire gets a Hurricane wing and vice versa,
the Me109 gets parts from the FW190 and vice versa.
Lots of more possibilities  :smiling_imp:
Show the creations to your aircraft modeling friends and watch
them figuring out whats wrong.

Almost as fun as making picture frames which have corners that
are one or two degrees off from 90 degrees and hang them on the walls.
Watch your guests et.c. trying to adjust them to hang straight.

Maybe combine both …
hmm :smiling_imp:

Rather cool wallhangers, I think.
And it looks like the one making them actually did put in an effort.

H.P.

Excuse me: what are “shadow boxes”?

It’s just a deep box that alows you to display 3 dimensional objects more easily.

This one is not as deep as others, but you get the idea…

Thank you. I understand.

Might as well. I’ll never build these otherwise…

I thought I’d take a break form the tedium and start one. The MPC kits are a bust.

Looks like I’ll need a few more Airfix kits!
