Ah, thanks Frenchy ! What I took to be a big ugly weld looks to maybe be mounts for Kontakt 1 ERA bricks. Here’s a WAG, it’s a sheet metal guard to block the gap between the hull & turret from behind.

Haven’t seen track retaining gear on the drive sprocket of an Abrams since the eighties.

I believe the Abrams sent to Ukraine were all former USMC vehicles and they had continued to use the retaining rings.

This seems like an awful lot of extra weight to add to the turret. The bar armor, the steel plates on the top, and I can only imagine what all those steel cables weigh. Can these turrets even be turned?

It’s certainly has uses so it whole new cottage industries could spring up and there is no shortage of material there.
