The parka we are concerned with here was a Waffen SS only issue. It pulled on over the head and had three buttons which closed the neck and chest area. It did not undo down the front as the later camouflaged winter combat suit did. There were two patch pockets on the chest and the deep hood was lined with fur. It was a suit, in that it was worn with baggy shapeless trousers of similar hue. It was first seen in any quantity in pictures taken of the SS Panzer Korps in Kharkov, which has led some authorities to refer to it as the “Kharkov parka”. It seems to have been general issue to Waffen SS combat troops, so both infantry and panzer units.
