My Aircraft Hangar Collection

Hey folks, I’m going to be relocating my Aircraft Hangar Collection here… Sit tight for images soon :slightly_smiling_face:

Copied over from the old site…

Somewhat inspired by Magnus and his Aircraft collection I thought it might be fun (and maybe a little embarrassing for me ) to collate my completed aircraft models since returning to the hobby in around 2006…

These are all 1/72 scale kits from Airfix unless otherwise noted

First up a Spitfire Mk1 circa 2009. Airfix sure have come a long way in terms of panel line finesse since then.

Then a Sea Hurricane circa 2010

And a PRXIX spitfire circa 2011

2012 and I decided to have a little fun with Wallace and Gromit, obviously not 1/72 but 1/12

2013 and along came the Walrus

2015 a Spitfire MkIX

2016 the Defiant made its appearance

in 2018 I finished this Typhoon… (My favorite Aircraft BTW )

After a bit of a hiatus from aircraft I planned to get as many finished this year (2020) as I can by signing up to numerous campaigns: To that end, here’s the first entrant into the Bae-Sopwith-Hawker Campaign: Airfix’s most recent 1/72 Hurricane offering.

After completing it, I hadn’t planned on posting any pictures of it to the Aircraft Hangar Collection, owing to several areas of disappointment with the build, but after photographing it I thought, hey, why not?

So here she is, first of the many, wing things completed for this year…

Next up for 2020 was Airfix’s 1/72 F Mk22 Spitfire for the Big Three campaign.
An enjoyable build of a nice kit. Trailing edges were fine and panel lines appropriate for the scale… I’ve gone with a cleaner look for this aircraft as they didn’t really see any action as such in WW2…

And 3rd aircraft for 2020 Airfix’s 1/72 Me262 built for the Schwalbe 2 Campaign

And of course this post wouldn’t be complete without this shot, even if not entirely accurate

This brings to 4 the number of kits finished in 2020, 3 aircraft and one Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
And there’s still a chance I might finish a couple more this year… :grimacing:

Hopefullly you guys who are masters of aircraft won’t laugh too much at my efforts but maybe I am getting better at these things over time…

There’s nothing to laugh about, Russell. I never do that! That would be unkind behaviour.

I like your Me 262 a lot. :+1: Very good paint job. I believe it’s again 1/72?

Still have to figure out how this new forum works, have just registered with my old username and avatar. At the moment I still feel more comfortable with the good “old” Kitmaker …

That’s a cool collection of builds Russell, don’t know why you should feel remotely embarrassed matey.

Thank you Torsten :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, all kits are 1/72 unless otherwise noted… I think the Me262 may be one of my better efforts, even though it was a difficult gestation. I like these type of collections, where you can see how, our skills progressively get better. Well, at least I hope I have :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

And, although the new forum is slightly different, I’m loving it. The ease of which I can upload pictures without the server going down is a great bonus :innocent:

Thank you Tim :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, I think a little embarrassment at my earlier efforts was good for me as it motivated me to try to improve, which, hopefully I have :innocent:

I hope to at least finish another kit for this year: The Gloster Gladiator for the Bi-planes campaign over on the old site

Love that BP Defiant! Please share background on markings for group and location?

Very nice Russell, I particularly like the sea hurricane.

Hi Stuart

thanks for dropping by and checking out my hangar collection. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m glad you liked the Defiant! :relaxed: Unfortunately I’m not very knowledgeable about the particular aircraft modeled, as I just used the scheme available in the kit

Hi John :slightly_smiling_face:

I too like the sea Hurricane  I might need to add a few more Hurricanes to the collection as the Arma kits look very nice :slightly_smiling_face: and there’s a few other schemes I’d like to try my hand at… :relaxed:

Hi! What I found on Wiki website was YD is No. 255 Squadron RAF serving November 1940 - September 1941 Fighter, Squadron code ‘YD’. Great looking kit!

There’s a bit more info on N3333 here

Apparently the a/c was written off (beyond repair) when the “Engine exploded when the aircraft was at about 4,000ft altitude. Crew parachuted to safety, sustaining only minor bruising. Subsequent examination of wreckage revealed bullet holes consistent with enemy action.”

This website shows an even more detailed history… glad you asked about her, Stuart, as now I’ve learnt a lot more about one of the models in my collection :slightly_smiling_face:

Russelle,

Your Mk22 Spitfire is striking. What an airframe! You did it proud.

Thank you Fred :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, the Mk22 is perhaps my favorite Mk of Spitfire… it’s where all the refinement, tuning and testing honed in the fires of conflict, were combined into the ultimate version of RJ Mitchell’s opus magnus… :face_with_monocle:

Hi Russ, thanks for posting your impressive collection. Ships and aircraft too - what a treat! (my favorite is Gromit…how was that build?)

Tim, Joe, thanks so much for dropping by and for your feedback :slightly_smiling_face:

Tim, the Wallace & Gromit kits were great fun to build: no rivet counting; and details were very light on :hugs:

In fact I enjoyed them so much I’d love to have built the Anti Pesto set as well, but was too late in trying to secure a kit. Now they’re way too expensive… Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers: for Airfix to reissue them but I don’t think that likely

Hi Everyone! :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, this was meant to be finished last year, bringing my year’s total to 5 completed builds, but, alas, real life takes precedent, and so, this will be the first finish for me for 2021 instead. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Airfix’s 1/72 Gloster Gladiator, MkII.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable kit to build, and the only thing I couldn’t quite nail was getting the prop to spin… but hey, it’s a model not a toy, so I’m not overly fussed… On with the pics.

This was built for the excellent Bi-Planes Campaign
I’m off to do a bit of work in the Salty Side of the hobby for the Tin Can Sailor Campaign now, but should be able to squeeze a few more aircraft in this year

Thanks again for dropping by… :slightly_smiling_face:
