Sorry Evan, the link was my next paragraph in which I postulated a possible reason for the difference in pronunciation. Now there’s some alliteration for you.
IIRC part of the differences in dialect between the UK & USA was due to a lot of anti-British sentiment in the US in the early 1800’s, that didn’t start to subside until WW1, & end until after WW2.
