I broke down and bought a jig for the smaller 48th scale builds.
from this site and others I went with the lego way.
Amount spent $3.00 at the local dollar store. $1 on the square and $2 on lego off brand bricks to get to the size shown. Smaller extras left over.
At least this went right this week with building. Just need to add some foam to the tops of the stacks.
A Swiss BF-109! … I love it! … also the jig, but I have a soft spot for Swiss things!.. 
I picked up a airfix 1/72 Bf109G-6 for a diorama and after I got it home I noticed it also had the swiss decals. You might want to check that one out.
I use Legos all the time for setting things up, mock ups and holding things in place. Awesome stuff Mr. Clark!!
