Was this version ever used in North Africa? Or with any German Fallshirmjaeger units?

No, only three Stugs were ever sent to North Africa, all Ausf.D, and attached to Sonderverband 288.

The 1st Battery/Sturmgeschutz-Brigade 242 went to Tunisia with four vehicles, but these were Stug III Ausf. F/8. They were placed under control of Fallschirm-Brigade Ramcke, but were not part of the unit.

Didnt 2 of the Stugs end up at the bottom of the harbor before the could be used?

Yes, 6 were shipped and 2 were lost enroute.

Does tied up a pier and dropping them off the boat count as “enroute”???

Can you please provide a reference as to where this information is found? I’ve looked in three different references and all indicate that they were lost enroute when their transport was sunk.
