I am considering getting a BRDM-2 based tank destroyer from Verlinden´s Trophy model range. Does anyone here have opinions (positive or negative) with this models.
I don’t know anything about the BRDM, but I built the MOWAG Piranha some time ago and it was a great little kit; I had a lot of fun with it (admittedly as a BGS What-If):
Kit 20013, BRDM-3 with AT-5 Fagot? I have that one (and 20014, SA-9 Gaskin) unbuilt but without the original boxes or instructions. I’ve also built the Piranha that Brian shows above, as well as the V-150 Commando in the USAF version (though that may be by Verlinden, not sure off the top of my head, but Trophy Models was just a brand of Verlinden Productions anyway). The two I built, went together very well — which is the typical experience with Verlinden, unless you try and build their M578 ARV. However, I’m not sure there is any real point to building one of these BRDM kits anymore, now Trumpeter has plastic ones that will probably be more accurate and likely easier to build.
Fully detailed lower hull, including 4 x half belly wheels, no transmission details,
wheels with stubs get glued to the semi-circular cutouts.
I bought an extra SA-9 Gasking (Dragon) 27 years ago to use as donor for lower hull. My plan was to cut off the Verlinden upper hull and fit it to the Dragon lower hull.
In fairness to Verlinden Robin, semi-circular wheels and cutouts, even sans transmission details probably really won’t be a show stopper in producing a decent enough model. After all, if you can’t see it, why portray it - or am I just a lazy modeller?
Actually, I know the answer: “Yes”.
Robin, sure, the hull is not detailed. But I rather worry about the upper hull with the missiles. Can you provide images of these?
I don´t think that Trumpeter will make them. I think they have dropped the BRDM-1/2 line. Thats why I go for Trophy models.
I compared the boxart with the real vehicle and found mistakes in the Trophy kit. Given the fact that the kit is from 1994(?) it is acceptable. But I wonder if I should pay 60€ for the kit?
Hi Peter,
thanks for this. Now I can think of a conversion of the Trumpeter kit. I found several dozen pics on the internet that are also helpful.
H.-H.
I would definitely not.
I’ll get those photos of the Trophy kit later this evening.
Thanks Robin!
You still haven’t told us which version you’re after If you want to build the 9P148 Konkurs, then MBK has two Trumpeter kits in stock, and it’s also available from others.
Of course, if you want the 9P122 Malyutka, you do need the Trophy kit, because I don’t think Trumpeter ever did that one.
Scalemates say they didn’t (or actually doesn’t say that they did)
That’s mainly what I was basing my remark on
In that case I think it is safe to say that Trumpeter did not make such a kit.
It would have been in my stash if they had relesed one …
Hey Jakko, yes, it´s the 9P122 model am after.
I think the 9P122 kit would be to complex to research for Trumpeter with the interior in mind.
Once upon a time there was this conversion made by PanzerShop:
It has some interior, the Trophy kit has none at all.
Closing the “lid” would be the safe but very boring alternetive.
I consider the launcher mechanism as interior.
