Panama 1989 Just Cause

Hi fellow modellers.

This is the delightful RFM M551 TTS Sheridan I was able to put together last year. Inspiration came from the below picture found on the interweb.

-For discussion purpose only-

What struck me was how civilian life seem to go on without interuption. I have tried to catch this duality in a small diorama/vignette. My diorama is rather clean and free from the normal clutter. This is intentional as the picture that inspired me also is very tidy.

I have used MiniArt figures (Urban Travellers) a Balaton figure (The old man) and some old Dragon figures for crew an foot soldiers.

figures in progress..

M551 TTS, tracks replaced with MasterClub. Home made cammo net.

Hi Ingvar,

Excellent vignette, very original, and very well done, I really like the Sheridan with its camo and the soldiers.

Cheers

A super dio- lots of great figures and staging plus the Sheridan is painted and weathered nicely.

I had a friend involved in that invasion and he showed me a picture of a Sheridan that had the pancaked in with a parachute failure and it sunk about 4 ft into the dirt and did the beer can thing it became a if they once they got it out of the hole it was like two feet shorter there’s been so many times when trying to build a Sheridan kit I thought of doing that diorama just to hide all the mistakes

I’m speechless. But in a good way this time. Extremely well done!

Yeah heard about that. They tried to lift it out with a Chinook eventually but it wouldn’t budge, if I got the story correct. Crazy lol

That would make an interesting diorama yes!

Indeed. There were ten straight up parachute drops.
But I always wanted to do one on a LAPES pallet:

Well built and a great and interesting dio.

Which reminds me that I have to finish my Rangers M151…

Excellent scene! :+1:t3::+1:t3: Although the civilian figures look more European than Central American in build and appearance. But considering the lack of available civilian figures, you work with what you can get.

IIRC, there were two that burned in on the heavy drop. One landed in the adjacent swamp area and could not be extracted, so was demoed in place, and this one that hit solid ground

Thank you all, it was a fun build. I got opportunity to try to paint jeans for the first time. Two of the “Urban Travelers” are supposed to carry take-away coffe. I was a grown up in 1989 and as far as I remember no one was carrying coffe mugs on the streets back then. Some research showed that McDonalds was present i Panama already in the 70ies. I did find a site where all the Coca Cola mugs used in McDonalds cronologically was depicted. I did try to paint the ones used in 1989. Research is almost as fun as modelling :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: You can find the most unbelievable neard-facts on the web.

Yes, parachute dropping armoured vehicles is a dangerous exercise. The German paras did try it with their Wiesel. They do not do that anymore. The Soviet Union even had a parachute/retro-rocket system. They even made trials air-dropping BMDs with personel onboard… -it did not go that well…

Indeed a safer way to get an airborne armoured vehicle to the battle field.
