Q? about colour of M3 Stuart used by Australia

G’day all

With Miniart’s imminent release of their M3 Stuart used by us in New Guinea, it has got me thinking about its colour scheme.

I know Starmer has intimated the Khaki Green we painted our vehicles for Jungle use, bears close resemblance to G3. Is there any evidence to suggest our specialised Stuarts received this colour at WKSHP level when the turret ring was added around the base or did they remain in OD?

Cheers

Yeah, G3 is a good approximation of Aust green, ours tendered to be a bit browner but I reckon this will be acceptable: Premium KHAKI GREEN G3 30ml – The Scale Modellers Supply

Thanks mate. Now to find out if we kept them OD, repainted the whole tank, or just painted the specific mods our workshops fitted

one link into the AWM states the following:

Description

M3 Stuart, turret shell and upper hull section, of rivetted and welded construction. It has been finished in Khaki green, Number 3 paint. This vehicle was used by Australian troops against the Japanese at Cape Endaiadere, Buna, in New Guinea in December 1942. It has suffered extensive battle damage to both sides of the hull and to the port side of the turret. All the hits were made by small calibre armour piercing projectiles and most hits have penetrated the armour plate. The drivers front hatch cover is missing, as is the commanders cupola hatch and the gunners viewing port cover, located on the turret side.

History / Summary

This turret and upper hull section is believed to have been the remains of the vehicle commanded by Sergeant John Church, 2/6 Armoured Regiment at the battle of Cape Endaiadere, Buna, in New Guinea in December 1942. The vehicle was stranded on a tree stump, abandoned by the crew and subsequently shot up and knocked out by Japanese fire on 24 December 1942. In 1973 the hull and turret were salvaged from the Buna area and restored by 2 Base Workshop RAEME. It was later transferred to the Australian War Memorial and displayed as a war relic.

Also this picture to me seems to show that entire vehicle is one colour so I would assume it is all G3

and this one’s Description is: MELBOURNE, VIC. 1943-05-21. CORPORAL J. KELLY OF 2ND AUSTRALIAN ORDNANCE TANK DEPOT, WORKSHOP SECTION, SPRAYING PAINT IN A CAMOUFLAGE PATTERN ON TO A STUART M3A1 LIGHT TANK.

so again I reckon G3 is the colour for the overall vehicle.
