The other day I was considering making my own plaster impregnated gauze for terrain making (don’t know why!). I thought of cheese cloth, or medical gauze, but realized they had a way too large weave to hold plaster…plaster bandages have a very tight weave. Then another thought struck! Where do they get gauze (which doesn’t fall apart) for that kind of bandage? That kind of gauze with a tight weave would be perfect for camo (and other kinds) of netting in both 1/35, and 1/72 scales. Any thoughts? I’ve used bridal veil (tulle), but it tends to be too stiff to be form fitting.

I used my old socks for that kind of work on the model railroad club 20 years ago. Holds plaster just fine …
Gauze.
How large are the openings in the weave of that camo-netting?
Plaster of Paris gauze is somewhere around 17 threads per inch
so the openings are about 1.5 mm (x 35 → 2 inch openings in the 1:1 scale cammo net?)
I like the idea. Having had unfortunately a lot of medical procedures this past 1 1/2 years, I can confidently say there would a medical gauze to suit. They come in all sizes. Only thing is to find ones without adhesive.
Another smaller scale suggestion would be a tea bag. Bought some special blend tea and it comes in a small material bag that after use (can’t waste good tea!) can be washed and dried to make a nice, small net shape.
Here’s a photo comparison with basic medical gauze and a toothpick for scale;
Hmmm…looks good. Thanks!
