Rerelease CH-53E by Academy?

That will be awesome, thank you!

@18bravo 18bravoare you making sponsons and fuel pods to back date the academy Sea Dragon to a Sea Stallion?

if you are count me in and how much to send them to the UK?

I have thought about it, but so far you are the only one who has expressed an interest in saving several hundred dollars.

If I do decide to cast them, it’ll be after I add rivet and other details.

I am interested if you cast them. :+1:

@18bravo well as I see it, this is the best option to back date the Sea Dragon and possibly the only way to do it.

So if you go ahead with this, do you have a time scale for it?

Do you know what other alterations to the exterior of the Sea Dragon would need to be made to make it into a Sea Stallion? I had a casual look at both sets of instructions on scalemates and couldn’t see much.

I’ve pretty much put off everything I’m doing until after the first week of December, although there is an AC/DC tribute band playing locally tonight…

Actually, I’m doing the Super Stallion, but I don’t see any other major differences in the kits either, other than the sponsons. Theoretically you could build the Super Stallion without the sponsons, in some sort of maintenance dio, as my photos show them removed in part. I imagine one could also get by with shaping rudimentary ones out of wood on a belt sander (which I did until I bought the kit) and hiding them with the modeler’s best friend - the tarp.

At any rate, it’ll be two months before I attempt this. Meanwhile I collect Rezkit items. The cockpit seats are worth every penny.

Like 18Bravo said it’s a Super Stallion as a Sea Stallion is the two engine A/D version. If you look at my sprue photo you also need the Flir pod etc and at least according to Academy that is the difference between the CH-53E sprue F and MH-53E sprue H. Also the nose ecm sensors on step 10.

Seriously, you forgot about me already lol? Of course I’m interested, but just in case….

Hey, count me in if you ever make them please.

I’m still working on the 3d prints slowly, was hoping to form the attachment edges to the fuselage soon. I just can’t get the profile from the photos due to the fuselage curvature. May not be indentical to the CH-53E kit either so thought an actual figment session would be safer.

I’m actually two days ahead on my reading right now. Downside: Yankees lost.

So here’s a question worth asking: Do I bother putting rivet detail on the sponsons? While they cry out for it (and yes, it would be visible in 1/48) would that look odd as the rest of the kit lacks any rivet detail at all? I suppose folks could add their own rivet detail according to their own level of AMS.

I would be fine adding my own detail. That way we can balance it out with whatever else.

I agree. Matching the kit plastic will meet most folks needs. AMS folks probably won’t like them as it probably won’t match their other rivets.

I sure there are some that would complain either way.

Would it be possible to get a few profile shots and scale of parts F14 and F15. Having trouble shaping the fairing thing that connects the sponson to the tank assembly.

Thank you!!

@jasonsmith are you 3D printing copies of these and the sponsons? if so can you put me down for some please.

Sure, I will work on that for you.

I most likely won’t be printing and shipping as I don’t have a resin printer but I will of course share the files once completed. However @18bravo may mold the parts from the originals which will be 1000% more accurate than my 3D modelling. I don’t have much Fusion 360 experience so I’m just winging it and learning as I go.

I did some more work on the rear cut out area and a whole pile of other things including the gear well.

I also 3d printed it on my FDM printer to get an idea of how it would look and fit. My printer can go a bit more finer of a print but will save that for the finalish version.

My modelling putty is interfering with the fit, but I’ve left enough on the mating surface to be sanded and tweaked for a perfect fit.

@jasonsmith thanks for the info, I would be very interested in purchasing a copy of those files, I assume they would work on a liquid resin 3D printer as well as a filament version?

I know a guy that could print them up for me here in the UK.

@18bravo how far along have you come to making physical copies of the Sea Stallion sponsons that are for sale?

kind regards

Klaus

I welcome the 3D printed ones for you guys if they work out. I still have another month to go before I can delve back into the hobby, other than little spurts here and there. It’s 8 am here. I’ve already been reading for two hours - just taking a break from it now,

I may be flying to Berlin for research, but I’ll keep you posted.
