Schwimmwagen help please

Hi All, can anyone please help with identifying the SS unit and hopefully other views of this picture, it was taken by Kreigsbetichter Scheffler of SS-Untersturmfurher Kasper’s ad-hoc Volkswagen /Schwimmwagan companies, apparently bolstered by 2 Sdkfz 10/5 Pak 38, a towed 7.5cm Pak as well.

Cheers

Naming the photographer and the commander of the unit is way ahead of any info I have. There is another photo in the sequence at IWM. In Hell’s Gate this is identified as 1SS around Cherkassy. There was a thread on another forum looking for more detailed info. I don’t see a Scheffler in the SS Kriegsberichter archive. Where did you find the names?

Hi Phil,

Ohh I can’t take any credit or fault re names etc,:joy::joy::joy:, I found the picture on pintrest, and the original poster, had it in the blurb they supplied. Unfortunately due to my crap computer skills somehow in the process of saving it, it named me as the person is who knew anything about it.:joy::joy::rofl:. So far i have accumulated 11 Schwimmwagan’s and one sdkfz 10/5 Pak 38.

So you at least know what division they are from!! So thank you very much for that information!!

Cheers

Pretty sure this is the Leibstandarte. The Pak 38s on Sdkfz 10s were a field modification unique to this unit I think.

Hi Keavdog,

Thank you very much for that!! I have never heard of Google lens, I tried to get it to translate to English but my ham fisted computer skills killed that idea!! :joy::rofl::rofl:

But I now know, it is the 1st SS LSSAH, and that it is in the Ukraine in October 1944, all information, I didn’t know earlier. Until all you helpful chaps came along, was hoping to maybe find a couple more pictures, different angles about.

Cheers

It would have been early ‘44, consistent with the Cherkassy battle.

If you’re using Chrome as your browser right click and choose Translate To English down near the bottom of the pop-up menu.

Can’t help on the unit unfortunately, but to my eye that looks like a very early schwimmwagen. The front bumper, for want of a better word, is rounded. Later ones were more angular. I believe this would make it one the first 150 or so Porsche produced vehicles. I am more than happy to be corrected by more knowledgeable people.

The source of the picture on this website is Timo Worst. If you dig around you’ll see that he’s written three books on aufklarung battalion of LSSAH so that dovetails with the info in Hell’s Gate. @Tanksami it looks like he’s on facebook and has a website where you can buy his books so you might be able to contact him through one of those and see whether he has any more details.

It is not German, it is Dutch.
I tried to read it in case I could assist with a
translation but the first two words told me it was Dutch.
