Detail painting and washes are about done, clear flat is on. Now to make it dirty. I see pics of these tanks with lots of gray-ish spray, especially on the lower hull and running gear, apparently from wet gravel roads so I think that’s what I’ll try for.
@rfbaer - Russ, that Leo starts looking really good!
And I’m done with my flak.
So here are the photos of the finished flak itself:
And here is the stowage in the Horch:
And the whole combo looks like this:
I had fun building it and knowing how much better I am now in comparison to when I‘vebuilt the Flakvierling for the first time (over 30 years from now!).
I weathered last night, my first time to do anything with a white tank. I ended up doing it as I would have done a light tan scheme in dirty, wet conditions. Last night I was pretty sure I went too far, but now I’m not so sure. I went heavy on the running gear and areas that would have gotten dirty from splash and spray, keeping the turret top and upper sides a little less filthy.
At this point, to make it less dirty would be very difficult so this is it whether I like it or not.
Antenna masts and the spare road wheels are all it lacks, I think…
Nice weathering of the hull. The turret is a bit too dark to my taste. But as you said it’s too late to change it and after all it is YOUR model. If you’re happy with it this is what is the most important.
I agree, the turret is a bit too dark for my taste too, and I tried to lighten it a bit but I’m very much afraid of making it look like it’s off of a different tank- it’s very difficult to get the white to match at all. I have a Tamiya Leclerc that I want to do in UN white so I can apply what I’ve learned on this model to that one and hopefully get a better result.
Initially I thought it was too dusty. I’m less convinced now that is the case. A lot of it would depend on where it is deployed at any given time. I think the white on the front that shows a kind of mud streaking is well done and makes it clear that it’s an originally white vehicle - as a particular observation. This is purely a psychological suggestion - I wonder if instead of putting it on brick putting it on dirt might change the perception of it?
I agree with the dirt road for a base, I just didn’t have time to do a base for it so I used one of my multi-use bases for the pics. It’s sitting on a contest table now, I’ll do something more appropriate after today.
I don’t think the base detracts from it. Tanks move from one environment to another. A wet dirt road is going to throw up a lot of clumps of earth, which I don’t see much of. But on a road, where melting ice or just rain mixes with dirt, you get that swirling mist of brownish spray that gets on everything, much like this example.
