Hey Guys,
As the above title says, as the Germans were towing a lot of broken down, no petrol etc vehicles what would they use to tow them, I am assuming just ropes and chains, I have never seen a soft skinned towing cable a’la on the AFV’s.

Recovery vehicles used bars -you can see them stored on Bergepanther’s deck like this:
For light, wheeled vehicles I guess cables would be ok.

Thank you for the reply, the cables is the sticking point 
, as I have never seen a close up of light vehicles be towed to confirm if it is actually a cable or just chain or rope like I am guessing.

Ropes and chains have the tendency to snap. And when a chain snaps under tension it becomes a deadly whip on anyone standing within range!

Totally agree, seen them snap myself, I just hadn’t seen any “light duty” towing cables in photos, hence wondering what was used. 
Larger, heavier vehicles were towed by cables as well. In the pic below, I’m told there is a third FAMO just outside the frame of the photo to the right, you can just make out the cable to the next FAMO.

Yep you are correct on both counts sir, I knew about the heavy duty cables on all the tanks, the light duty ones are what I am trying to find either to make or buy .

I think I am slowly starting to cobble together some thickness/size dimensions, I wonder if 1/48th scale AFV towing cables would work for smaller/light vehicle ones in 1/35th??

I used some craft stuff decades ago, so it’s been lost over time. This is not the right size (or maybe it is) but look for somehting like this:

You’ll get a lot more than you would buying something specifically for our hobby, where someone charges you $8.99 plus shipping for a six inch length of the same stuff.

I have used steel fishing leader line for cables.
Available from most fishing stores, and comes in a reasonable variety of thicknesses.
Usually plastic coated but that is easy enough to strip off. Might need annealing depending on how tight a bend, if any, is required

Smaller electrical cables (think charging cable for mobile phones, cables for earphones, computer cabling and similar) contain fine copper wire.
Check the insides of cables before discarding them …
