Any more pictures Joachim? These are very evocative, even atmospheric.
Ah the old adage, “If you scratch build it, they will make it” still holds.
As is well known, the T-10 tank was not exported to any other countries or armies throughout its entire existence. But what was the attitude of the GDR and the NVA towards this? There were plans to incorporate this tank into their arsenal. There were already tank units equipped with heavy battle tanks in the 1950s. I found an article about this in a book that I’d like to share with you. The book is very interesting for fans of tank technology. The next question is, were there also ARV tanks based on the T-10?
Hello!
No, ARVs were not built.
The IS-2 base was used, for a very short time, and then the ISU base.
Hello Holger
Thanks for your answer, I actually agree with you. No ARVs were built in series. But the reality is different. In the early 1970s, as a schoolchild, I observed a railway loading operation in which a T-10 tank was being loaded onto a crane. It was a tank from Panzerwerkstatt 2 (Tank Workshop 2), so it was an NVA vehicle. I have researched this vehicle to this day, all without success. At that time, the T-55Tk was not yet part of the NVA’s inventory. Whether it was a test vehicle is unclear. This vehicle does not appear in any publications. The same applies to the ARV tank JS-3MT, which I saw in the late 1960s. I was more successful with my research there. We will come back to this tank in another topic. The JS-2MTs were actually in service for a long time; they could even be seen at parades in Moscow for several years.
