Stash shock

Yikes! I was a little surprised about how much an RFM panzer iii cost at one online retailer and saw it was substantially cheaper at another and it made me start looking at the various panzer iii kits and that made me wonder which versions of the panzer iii i already have. So, I went to check the stash. No surprises on the panzer iii but I was shocked about how many kits I have (of various subjects) that I forgot I had. I had to sit down….

Lucky you if you just notice kits you own, as long as you don’t realize that there are some two or more times …

That’s why I decided to have a stash register to prevent getting duplicates/triplicates …

In fact I’ve got one, too, but do you really always check before when a good deal is challengeing ?

Excel workbook in the computer
plus Internet browser in the computer.
plus Web-shop on internet
equals easy check to search the name in the workbook.
I also add any in the register to show which model
it is allocated to.
I willingly spend that time to ensure that my hard earned cash doesn’t buy a kit I already have instead of a new kit that I really “need” …

Scalemates is easier, as in more portable…

Don’t need portable, internet at my desk is a LOT closer than a physical shop 100 miles away.
Travel 100 miles or more with a phone with a palm sized screen just to be able to browse scalemates in a shop when I might as well sit at my desk with two large screens?
Portable isn’t all it is cranked up to be when it has to be transported long distances.
The information on my harddisk is still there when the internet goes down or is not accessible
(summer house in an area with poor coverage). I also prefer to have my stash register available
if scalemates should go belly up …
A very fine resource for many purposes but my stash register stays where it is.

Most of my shopping is from internet shops in Germany or Poland, don’t want to waste kit money on travel …

In your situation I can imagine that. I have a LHS and visit shows twice or thrice a year. Then portability comes in quite handy. I’d say they complement each other…

I’m a little concerned about all this talk of avoiding duplicates! I have multiples of kits that I plan to build as different variations - after all the US built over half a million 2-1/2ton trucks…

Yes, unless I am absolutely certain I don’t have the kit. For aftermarket and accessories, I always check. I’ve never been so crazy to buy a kit or in such a madhouse buying frenzy that I could not spare 30 seconds to check my tablet. One can always pull the kit aside, check for duplication, and put it back.

I have a PDF output from my MS Access data that I carry in my tablet, and I take my tablet to every show. (Robin could create the same thing from his Excel file.) The output PDF could be on my phone, that I always carry outside the house, just as easily. Inasmuch as it takes an internet-connected electronic device to access Scalemates while the pdf is accessible via any electronic device, even in airplane mode, I would say the PDF is more portable.

I’m the same. I have 5 of some kits just because I can replicate different variations that I like :+1:

I keep a spreadsheet in Google Docs of my models. Especially since I like to track how much I spend on them…

Variants and conversions does not count as duplicates
Kit A = Base kit C + Conversion D
Kit B = Base kit C + Conversion F
Kit A is not a duplicate of kit B

True, but often it’s 5x Kit A, + a ton of scratch-work, = 5 different results!

Even better. Definitely counts as another kit

Guys, just imagine how many kits you will “actually” build. Now is the time to thin the herd. Post your sale items so’s I can buy some more before I sell mine.

I have a few models where I enjoyed the build so much I got more of them. RFM Leopard 2 and Meng Abrams and a few others. But I don’t stray from scale or modern era and those keep me from going too crazy. Still, I’ll be 385 years old before the last one goes to paint and that’s if I stopped buying.
