How do you get the soft edges with camoflauge?

If you use masks,raise them up off the model,with a piece of tape underneath,it will give a softer edge,depending on your airbrush and your talents,you might be able to freehand it by thinning your paint down really thin and turning down the PSI

This was my attempt at it though I was trying to get sharper edges:



I freehand airbrushed it and it was honestly pretty easy. I find Tamiya paints thinned with the retarder thinner worked great. What also helped me a lot was adding X-22 Clear, no clue why but mixing a clear coat with your paints makes them spray hella smooth.

I think it looks good, but I agree that putting a little spacer under the masking would help improve the edging.
