I still have one in my stash that I plan to build with several Verlinden update sets. I also have a resin turret from a manufacturer (that I forgot) but I think it is a copy of the poor shape of the Tamiya kit.
I think with a drop of bodywork putty you can solve the matter…
Yes I did one many years ago in Syrian camouflage and markings; I added the external fuel tanks lines and some other small details. It came pretty good.

Coming along nicely. Why did you have to cut the hull?
compare Tamiya with drawing I found some mm of differencies in the wheels position, so I have modified the hull.
