I’m about to start the Tamiya Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind kit (35233) and am looking to get some after market tracks. I fancy some 3D printed ones that preferably don’t require any gluing. Two questions:
which version of Panzer IV tracks do I need? I believe the chassis is likely to be ausf G or H possibly J but I’m unclear on which tracks will fit.
any suggested makes that are readily available on the UK? Some of the top review ones seem very difficult to source here in Blighty, such as Panzerwerk and DEF Models.
Judging from the photos I’m looking at, the tracks appear to be Kgs 61/400/120 type 3A.
Sorry, I can’t help you with fit questions or available suppliers.
Theoretically, the Wirbelwind could be found with several different track types, (I’ve even seen Pz. IVs with a mix of solid and hollow guide teeth on a single track). They were manufactured on Ausf G through Ausf J chassis, the majority on Ausf H. However, the photo you posted, as well as the ones I’m looking at, show the earlier, hollow guide teeth. The PT35019 tracks have solid guide teeth. In the long run, the actual track type probably isn’t important. Finding ones that fit the sprockets without major surgery is probably more of a concern.
Hi,
What is your objective with the project? Seems strange to me to be spending more than the kit price on 3D printed tracks for a 50 year old Tamiya if accuracy is not a high priority. Have you had this one in the stash for decades and couldn’t face the vinyl tracks? Lots of other areas of this kit could benefit from A.M. additions too, like the cannons, armoured crew cabin, OVM etc, etc…and then there’s the Zimmerit…
@jpwaller Hi, thanks for the comment, yes I should’ve explained my motives a bit!
I build my models for fun and accuracy is a secondary consideration for me. I do enjoy researching vehicles that I’m going to build but that is just for my own edification really.
I don’t get on well with individual link tracks that need gluing (I’ve a shelf queen Dragon Firefly with two ruined sets of tracks that will attest to that ) so I fancied some click together 3D printed links for my current project. Having just re-watched Panzermeister’s videos on them, I thought I would see if I could pick some up.
The Heavy Hobby ones came out well in his review but I didn’t realise they are close to 40GBP here in the UK which is too expensive. I was going for something nearer the 20 to 30GBP price point. The kit was a gift so I’m comfortable paying for some better tracks. If this doesn’t work out I’ll use the rubber ones
Edit: I may do a few “upgrades” such as drill the gun muzzles, add some weld seams and the eyes on the turret for a camo wire
I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of this build which ever way you go with the tracks etc., that, of course, is the point of the hobby And if you need any detail info you know where to ask for it
best regards
John
One week since order, payment taken but no confirmation email. I’ve emailed them but no response. Do you guys normally get some communication from QuickWheels?
They didnt send me a confirmation email last time,I waited 3 weeks and emailed him and got an immediate reply that it had been shipped, then it arrived later that day.
Longer shipping time then most, but only $5 and change cost from Russia or Poland
Received a response first thing today. Tracks have been shipped and a tracking number will be sent to me when he arrives in the office so all looking good
They arrived, had some good comms from the supplier in the end
That’s the good news😂
I’m not getting on well with them tbh. Fiddly to assemble which is fine, I accept I have sausage roll fingers and mole eyesight but several have broken and done just won’t click together properly so I’ve had to glue them. I’ve rage quit for now and will revisit another day.
My solution to this is to move away from tanks to armoured cars once I’ve finished the Wirbelwind.
