I had every intention of finishing it up this past weekend, but the project had to wait while other events took precedence. Anyway, it is completed and I am getting ready to post the pictures.

I am calling my MikroMir Models 1/35 C.S.S. H.L. Hunley Confederate Submarine project finished.
I enjoyed this project even though I battled with the photo-etched brass pieces. I managed to break off the brass piece that protruded from the front of the hull that the spar attached to. So I made a replacement with part of a small brad type nail. I figure it will be much stronger. I made my own propeller shroud out of plastic card as I didn’t want to mess with the brass pieces. I used thread to make up the rope that served as support for the spar as well as the line that was used to trigger the fuse igniter that was in the rear of the torpedo/bomb. I added the fuse igniter to the torpedo/bomb just to try and make it a little more realistic looking. I also drilled out the ends of the snorkel tubes for a little more realistic look as well. I painted the whole thing with Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black and used Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown for the rust and I painted the torpedo/bomb with Humbrol No. 55 Metallic Bronze. I painted the display base with Tamiya TS-48 Gunship Grey. After everything was dry I gave the whole thing a couple of coats of Testors Dullcote. I had drilled out all of the portholes and deadlights during construction and when the Dullcote was dry I filled them with Microsol Kristal Klear.
So anyway, I am calling this project finished. This is the first campaign that I have completed in years. Also the first model I have completed in a long time as well.

I might just keep my eyes open for one of these kits. Besides from a few Esci 1/72 figures I did in my youth, I’ve never done anything from the ACW.

After looking at the finished project I am thinking that I maybe should have displayed the snorkel tubes in the upright position.

Yeah maybe, would give it a bit of height and be obvious what they are to another observer. Problem is though, such things can be a bit delicate and always run the risk of damage. Always tricky to make that compromise.
I need to get back on with that Lynx, it’s sat neglected for a little too long now.

Thank you Mike. Not really a naval modeler and I don’t know much about the Civil War, but I have been fascinated with the Hunley ever since I watched the movie The Hunley back in the 90s. Interesting subject.

I have also just bought a 1/35 Biber. I messed up my water surfaces on the last coat with way too much white foam and it still anoys me. I am up for another try if we do a Torpedo II campaign.

Well, I couldn’t help myself and wanted to do the rear canopy section open for the Devastator. Cut off the last two sections and trying to use a heat gun to form thin clear plastic over the kit canopy.
Front canopy section is attached. Pretty poor fit.
I also warped it a bit when using the heat gun. Still trying to get the last two sections to work.

i am trying to do the same thing to my b6n jill as btwosan is. except i cast a buck of the canopy in resin and am trying to vac form one. i am having difficulty getting a full pull, i only get the top half of the canopy formed before it cools too much to complete the form. i tried with both clear plastic i cut out of food containers and evergreen clear sheet. what am i doing wrong?
the plane is on it’s landing gear and basically done except the canopy. wish the kit had made the canopy in sections instead.

The resin torpedo included with the Valom TBD Devastator kit looked a bit off to me.
Too narrow and the fins looked wrong too. More like an older Mk 8 torpedo instead of the Mk 13.
So 3D printing to the rescue. I found a free model online and did some adjustment to the rear fins to match reference photos better.
Painted a silver rear section with a brown wash applied to simulate the grease coating and a grey nose.
