Unidentified Flying Object

Maybe an idea for someone. How about ‘Danny Boy’ from Doctor Who:
“Danny Boy” once helped the Eleventh Doctor to attack a Dalek saucer. His Bracewell modified Spitfire had a gravity bubble around it for space travel and carried laser guns.

Probably a silly question, but what film or series is this? It’s been bugging me because I feel like I should know.

The Expanse. I got to watch the first 2-3 seasons ,then the bastards put it on streaming. Excellent. The special effects/ filming were movie quality. The Expanse (TV series) - Wikipedia

Ah, thanks.

I’ve been trying on and off with series 1 since last year but found it a hard slog. Just couldn’t get into it. I kept persisting every few weeks hoping something would click. Maybe it got better in later series, but I don’t like picking up a new sci-fi show at later episodes in case I missed an important plot point.

In fact, it reminded me to try again this weekend but Amazon have removed it. Something about expired licenses. Great!

Was on SyFi Channel for 3 (?) seasons … Was a pain in the arse would have a season then be off for a year and a half. Come back then gone for 9 months. Then SyFi couldnt afford it… not surprised. The production on it was on the level of a feature length, Spielberg movie. Then it went to streaming till it ended. Besides the awesome film work there was a couple on good looking ladies in the cast. (I had the hots for Gunny Draper and Secretary-General Avasarala. )

Maybe they’ll renew it, I’ll have to keep checking back.
But my god were some episodes in series 1 boring. I did just leave me constantly wondering what the link between the cop in the asteroid mine and the crew on the other spaceship was? I couldn’t work it out. I think I got to about 7 or 8, so not many more to go I don’t think.

I’ll keep a lookout, but in the meantime I do need to crack on with this build!

In hindsight, that was probably a little too critical of me. I found the show intriguing and frustrating in equal measures and often finished an episode with more questions than answers and I could only watch when in the mood to. Unless it gets picked up again, I suppose I never will find out what happens. There seems to be a lot more action in later series. Unless it gets renewed or picked up by another channel. This is what I dislike about streaming and will always be in favour of physical media.

Anyhoo, made a little start on the F-19 today. Plastics a bit rough and showing wear and tear on the molds. Some scuffs, scratches and flash in places. So needs a sand down to smooth it out. Some whittling will be needed to get the top and bottom to fit together.

I’ve currently got one of the Italeri Mig-37’s on its way to me. Should arrive in the next day or so. I had originally planned to convert it to something from the Star Trek universe, a Dominion War era Starfleet fighter. But, I have another plan in mind. I might pick up another for that though.

I know exactly how you feel. I started watching it with a friend that came over one evening a week. It was a bit of a haul at first. I got into season 3 before I went O/S and now I have to wait for repeats.

It’s arrived!

A real piece of 1980’s nostalgia.

Not many parts, nicely moulded too. I like that they went to the extreme of making the LGB’s multi-faceted ‘stealth’. Aphid missiles are typical from the time, looking close enough but not quite right.

Two paint options with decals duplicated in different colours. I probably won’t use anything but the stencils from the grey variant.

Should be a fun little build.

Awesome seeing the F-19 and Ferret appear here. Definitely a blast from the past. I still remember all the conjecture swirling around the real stealth fighter right up until it was revealed. Those two models are conjectural fiction done right.

As a child of that period, I remember the F-19 appearing in lots of books and magazines. 8 year me was convinced it existed!
This speculative artwork was in so much, it’s permanently burned into my brain!

There was even a GI-Joe toy but it was somewhat unobtainable and expensive here in the UK. Do remember having a Stealth helicopter of theirs though.
When Desert Storm happened I remember getting excited about seeing the real F-117 in the news. It was a big deal back then.

Funny though I don’t recall any speculation on Soviet Stealth aircraft except for this kit. I’m not sure I still have any of my old books, but I might have a look around and see what I can dig up.

If I recall correctly, it was a Russian scientist who published the first paper on stealth technology as we understand it today (in the late 1940s?). He proposed designing objects that scatter RADAR emissions instead of reflecting them back at the emitter. This would render the objects invisible to RADAR.

Testors’ Ferret is probably an example of, “If we are working on it, they must be working on it, too.” Always lots of that going around in military circles.

Interesting. I’ll have to read up on that.

I’ve been trying to lay my hands on a book from the 80’s about the Soviet Air force I’ve got lying around somewhere. A birthday or Christmas present from back then. I remember there’s a plan drawing of what they thought the Su-27 looked like and it’s totally off! Plan view was ok, but the side profile was more like an F-15!

Need to rethink my armament for the Ferret (also thinking of renaming it. Something suitable for it’s new owner. Have a back story I’m working out for that). What I wanted to use were too big for the kits weapons bays. Have another idea, just need to test size.

My flying saucer is coming along painfully slowly. All of the bays turned out well. The engine turned out well. Unfortunately, my idea for the landing gear failed. Finding a better solution continues to evade me. The cockpit bucket is also a failure and requires replacing.

I may have a candidate: BUFF II. Details to follow.

“In the year 2525, if I should be alive ……”

*New Flash: US Space Force begins their BUFF II project: *

The underside is low-observable RAM-based black. When the vehicle is in orbit or de-orbiting, it is difficult to pick out against the starry backdrop. The upper surfaces have not been revealed in paint, but a recent leak revealed a three color of dark green, lighter green, and tan are planned. The paint scheme was lifted from previous BUFF history.

*A leaked pic showed what look like multi-mode missile cells, close-in APS, and a huge mantlet area at the nose of the turret for some kind of direct-fire energy weapons. Large curved surfaces at each corner underside seem to be AESA radars for weapons and navigation. *

Stay tuned!

I’m in as I just enrolled and changed from “Interested” to “Going.” I really want that unique UFO badge!

It’ll be some time before I start because I’m finishing up my “Improving Your Figure” figure, but I’m intending to build an armed Sci-Fi figure for this campaign. I’ve lots of Sci-Fi figures in my stash so I just need to decide on which one…plastic or 3D printed.

Welcome aboard!

UFO is proving to be a slow campaign but I am hoping it will pick up in the second half of the year.

My project stalled as I try different landing gear designs. My next landing gear design will use magnets.

I just finished the “Your Figure Keeps Improving 2024” campaign so I’m pondering which figure to enter for this UFO campaign…an OOTB 3D-printed figure or a 1/16 plastic figure with 1/16 resin accessories added to make it Sci-Fi.

Seriously, it’s the badge that made me enter this UFO campaign. The art design on the UFO campaign award is so cool that I just wanted it.
