Finding aftermarket Red Cross decals is easy - but those “winged Aesculap staffs” (or whatever they represent)? Kit makers seem to ignore them, and I’m unable to find them in 1/35 scale anywhere else. Help!
Archer Fine Transfers does an ambulance set with exactly what you’re looking for. $10.95.
They are called a caduceus, which is a staff with two entwined winged snakes, associated with the Greek god Hermes (or Mercury) as a symbol of commerce, speed, and negotiation. In the US, it is the symbol for medical services, especially in the US Military.
Peddinghaus has a set that includes the caduceus.
1:35 US Army and US Navy Dodge WC-54 Ambulance Markings Decals 3301
K4 Decals also has a set w/them.
HGW has a sheet for the WWI Model T ambulance that has a set as well.
235001 1/35 Decal Model T 1917 Ambulance Stencils
Lastly, there is a partial sheet from the Bilek WWII WC-54 Ambulance for sale at eBay.
Thank you very much! There should be something I could get.
I think you mess the “Rod of Asclepius”, which is what you see on the side of ambulances.
It has always been a confusing topic, where the Caduceus; more commonly associated with Commerce and Trade, was used by the US military to represent the Medical Corps, whereas the Rod of Asclepius is historically associated with the Greek God Asklepios, or Aesculapius, God of medicine and health (and used by hospitals and Ambulance services across the Western world).
is an interesting subject.
Thank you for that highly interesting link!
