US Marine Tanks In Korean War

For those looking for the 76mm E8 in 1:35, there’s the aforementioned Asuka and DML kits, but also the recent Tamiya (35359) and Rye Field Models kits, which all have their merits.

Wasn’t there a rebuild program under way in Tokyo? Not sure if they reached Korea, or what they were painted…

The Tokyo Ordnance Depot, in addition to repairing and renovating World War II equipment for use in Korea, instituted a program of modifying certain weapons and vehicles to make them more effective in combat. For instance, M4A3 tanks were modified for the replacement of the 75-mm. gun with the high velocity 76-mm. gun, and the motor carriage of the 105-mm. gun was modified so that it could reach a maximum elevation of 67 degrees to permit high-angle fire over the steep Korean mountains.”

IMHO that’s a decent enough model, but the fit of the bogies to the hull is very un-Tamiya, namely, rather loose. If you get the one with the T66 (waffle iron-pattern) tracks, those are also in much need of replacement, IMHO, because they’re just far too flat. Other than that, it’s a decent kit especially if you don’t go in for all the detail Asuka does give you.

Yes, there was a rebuild program of Shermans in Tokyo. Being an Army depot from the occupation forces, they likely would have used whatever OD paint that they had at the time. There was something about the external stowage configuration, a spare sprocket ring on the hull side or something like that, that set those tanks apart from stateside rebuilds. And yes they did reach Korea. I’m going off memory of the old Squadron Armor in Korea book for this. It’s been awhile since my M46 build and last looking at this book from my reference library.
