The FMTV’s hadn’t fully replaced the venerable deuce-and-a-halfs and five ton trucks by 2003. There were still a ton of them in service in Iraq early in the war. In fact, my first convoys as an Active Duty soldier in 2003 were riding in the back of 5-ton trucks. In order to meet the requirement for a crew served weapon on a convoy, a soldier would stand in the bed of a 5-ton with an M-240B and rest the bipod legs on the cab of the truck. I did this several times. When I returned in 2004 they were still in general use with my first convoy with 1st CAV being packed into the back of a 5-ton riding down Route Irish to Camp Taji. In response to IED’s, soldiers would cover them in old flak vests (some National Guard units still had stores of M-69 vests that they used for this purpose). There was plenty of experimentation with “Hillbilly Armor” consisting of various types of steel plates (diamond plate was supposedly the best).

As time went on, they were removed from unit property books and left in Iraq. Lacking Army issue up-armor kits, units would get issued them sometimes as “FOB runners” for administrative use inside the wire. Presumably these trucks were transferred over to the Iraqis.

Fun fact, in 2003 one of our northernmost mech companies was ambushed during a convoy down to the battalion main base outside Muqdadiyah. The 5-ton truck door on the driver’s side stopped several AK-47 slugs and the driver was unharmed.
